A&M beats Memphis in first-round NCAA soccer match

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Whitney Hooper scored two goals and added an assist as No. 22 Texas A&M beat Memphis 3-1 Friday in the first round of the NCAA soccer tournament at the LSU Soccer Complex.

Hooper set up the first goal of the match and netted the next two, helping the Aggies (15-6-2) to the second round of the tournament, where they'll face LSU (14-4-4) at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Tigers beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 7-0 Friday.

"To beat a well-organized, talented team like Memphis was going to take some really good goals, and we're fortunate that we have Whitney and that she scored those two," A&M coach G. Guerrieri said. "It was a nice way for us to get through the first game of the tournament."

Alyssa Mautz got the Aggies on the scoreboard in the sixth minute, and Hooper scored five minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

Memphis cut the lead in half in the 17th minute on a goal by Ashley Berra, but A&M regained its two-goal advantage when Hooper struck again in the 25th
