Logan Schaefer, the 14-year-old son of Texas A&M women's associate head basketball coach Vic Schaefer, remains hospitalized in Tyler's East Texas Medical Center ICU Unit after suffering a severe head injury.
Logan underwent surgery Monday for a subdural hematoma, a collection of blood on the surface of the brain.
"They had to remove a blood clot and relieve some pressure," Vic Schaefer said. "He's off of the ventilator now and some people here think that's an absolute miracle."
Logan had been in a coma.
"It was not induced," Vic Schaefer said. "It was all relevant to the injury that he sustained."
Schaefer said that his son was sitting up in a chair Friday after the ventilator was removed Thursday.
"He's been awake for brief periods of time," Schaefer said. "We've had some very brief conversations. Last night he was awake for several minutes, probably 12-15 minutes where we talked."
The injury was sustained in a wakeboarding accident at a church camp near Crockett. Logan was flown to Tyler.
"He was doing something he loves, wakeboarding, and he was wearing a helmet," said Schaefer. "The most recent update is that he is off of the ventilator and is fighting pneumonia. He's fighting every day, and we need everybody's prayers. Please continue to pray for our son and brother".
