The shift began in Fort Worth, where Texas Christian changed coaches, which led James Blasczyk to change his mind. Blasczyk had signed to play with the Horned Frogs under coach Neil Dougherty, but TCU officials granted Blasczyk his release after Dougherty was fired last spring.
Blasczyk considered enrolling in a prep school before deciding to sign with A&M. The 6-foot-11 forward from Friendswood is one of only two all-stars chosen for Monday's game who are headed to a Big 12 Conference school, with the other being South teammate Corbin Ray of Katy Taylor, who has signed with Texas Tech.
The all-star basketball game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Bill Greehey Arena on the St. Mary's University campus. The game will be held in conjunction with the annual Texas High School Coaches Association convention.
The THSCA all-star football game will be played Tuesday night at the Alamodome.
Blasczyk is the tallest player on either roster, followed by the 6-8 Ray. The tallest player for the North is 6-7 forward Cory Dixon of Class 3A Argyle, who is headed to Northwestern.
Expected to redshirt during the upcoming school year at A&M, Blasczyk averaged 10.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game as a senior for Friendswood. The Mustangs finished third in their district and lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
As a junior, Blasczyk had 8.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and four blocked shots per game.
