Texas A&M's late-season slide cost the Aggies a chance to host an NCAA college baseball regional.
Texas (41-13-1), Rice (39-15), Oklahoma (41-18) and Texas Christian (36-16) were among the 16 schools picked to host regionals by the NCAA on Sunday. The Aggies (36-22) were left to wait until Monday's NCAA tournament selection show to find out where they'll be playing.
This is the first time TCU has been selected to host.
"This is a great news for TCU and Fort Worth and is the result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved with the program over the last decade and certainly the players on this year's team," TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle said.
Texas won the Big 12 tournament title as well as the regular season title. Rice won the Conference USA tournament Sunday with an 8-6 win over Southern Mississippi. TCU won the Mountain West regular season title but lost out in the league's tournament. Oklahoma finished second in the Big 12, sweeping the Aggies to climb past Missouri. The Sooners were 1-2 at the Big 12 tournament, losing to A&M and Missouri.
Each four-team regional is a double-elimination format, with the 16 winners advancing to the super regionals beginning June 5.
The other 12 teams picked to host were led by top-ranked UC Irvine, which was selected to host for the first time in school history. The Anteaters, a College World Series participant two years ago, joined Louisville and TCU as first-time hosts. A&M beat UC Irvine 9-2 on Feb. 27 at the Houston College Classic.
The Atlantic Coast Conference led the field with four schools -- Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina -- selected as hosts. The Southeastern Conference was next with three: Florida, LSU and Mississippi.
The other hosts are Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton and East Carolina.
Sam Houston State won the Southland Conference tournament title Saturday to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year.
The rest of the field, including the top eight national seeds, will be announced at 11:30 a.m. Monday on ESPN (Ch. 27).
