SWIMMING

Aggies compete at FINA World Championships: ROME -- Five Aggies were in action on the first day of swimming Sunday at the FINA World Championships at Stadio del Nuoto.

Former Texas A&M swimmer Triin Aljand (Estonia) and sophomore-to-be Rita Medrano (Mexico) competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter butterfly. Aljand hit the wall in 59 seconds, while Medrano turned in a time of 1:00.47.

In the men's 100 breaststroke prelims, former A&M swimmer Alejandro Jacobo (Mexico) posted a time of 1:01.60. Senior-to-be Julia Wilkinson (Canada) swam 2:13.75 in the prelims of the women's 200 individual medley.

Former A&M swimmer Shawn Clarke (Barbados) swam in a pair of races. Clarke led off Barbados' 400-meter freestyle relay with a team-best time of 50.40 as the foursome turned in a 3:27.15. Clarke also posted 26.52 in the 50 butterfly.

TENNIS

A&M's Urbina advances to finals at Mitchell: Aggie-to-be Nazari Urbina takes on top-seeded Rosalia Alda of the University of Tennessee on Monday in the women's singles championship of the ITA Summer Circuit at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

The women's singles final is set for 9 a.m. In the women's doubles final, Urbina and Aggie teammate Stephanie Davidson face A&M's Sheri Olivier and Alda. That match is slated for 10:30 a.m.

In men's singles, Rice's Jonathan Chang advanced to the final by beating A&M's Colin Hoover 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3). Chang faces Texas-bound Benjamin Chen at 9 a.m. Monday.

Admission is free. The top participants in the various ITA Summer Circuit regional tournaments move on to compete in the ITA/USTA National Tournament, Aug. 8-12 in Bloomington, Ind.
