TRACK & FIELD

Edgar chosen for British team: Texas A&M's Tyrone Edgar has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the IAAF World Champonships in Berlin.

The British team for the World Championships was announced Tuesday. Edgar will compete in the 100 meters as well as the 4x100 relay on a squad of 60 athletes traveling to Germany. The event will be held Aug.15-23 in the same venue that hosted the 1936 Olympics.

Edgar becomes the ninth athlete with ties to Texas A&M track and field to be selected for entry into the 2009 World Championships.

The group of Aggies competing in Berlin includes current athletes Jessica Beard (United States), Julian Reid (Jamaica) and Gerald Phiri (Zambia) as well as incoming junior Tabarie Henry (U.S. Virgin Islands).

Beard is in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay pool. Reid will compete in the triple jump, and Phiri is in the 100 and 200. Henry, a 2008 Olympian who has competed at Barton County Junior College (Kan.) the past two seasons, will run in the 400.

Edgar is one of three A&M graduates traveling to Berlin, joining Fabrice Lapierre (Australia) and Simone Facey (Jamaica). Lapierre will compete in the long jump and Facey is in the 200 meters.

Three Aggie volunteer assistant coaches earned places on the United States team -- Muna Lee (100, 200, relay), Aries Merritt (110 hurdles) and Wallace Spearmon (200).

Aggie senior Yasmine Regis was not selected in the triple jump as the British selection committee opted not to send any female high, long or triple jumpers to Berlin.

Regis competed at the UKA Jumps & Throws Festival in Birmingham, England this past weekend, placing third with a mark of 42 feet, 3.25 inches. She needed at least the World Championships B standard of 45-11.25 to be considered for the team.
