Russell tied for sixth at U.S. Amateur: TULSA, Okla. -- Texas A&M sophomore Jordan Russell, a former A&M Consolidated standout, fired an opening round of 70 and tied for sixth place after the first day of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship.

Russell matched par on the Cedar Ridge Country Club course, shooting 36-34. He is two shots behind leader Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn. Four players are tied for second at 69.

Former A&M All-American Bronson Burgoon opened with a 73 at Cedar Ridge. Aggie junior Bryant Lach shot 77 at Southern Hills. A&M incoming freshman Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., posted an 80 at Cedar Ridge.

The field of 312 players will be trimmed to the top 64 after the second round, with match play starting Wednesday.

The Golf Channel will televise the first three days of match play (3-5 p.m. on Wednesday and noon-2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday). NBC Sports will televise Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's finals from 3-5 p.m. each day.
