A&M women to compete this weekend: ALBUQUERQUE -- The Texas A&M women's golf team will compete in the 30th Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Intercollegiate Saturday and Sunday at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course.

The Aggies won the rain-shortened Texas A&M "Mo"Morial by seven strokes in last week's season opener.

Lewis wins in Aggie debut: MIDLAND -- Texas A&M men's tennis newcomer John Lewis beat fourth-seeded and No. 85 Attila Bucko of Baylor 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10) to advance to the round of 16 in singles on the opening day of the 10th Annual Midland Collegiate Invitational at the Midland Racquet Club.

Senior Marcus Lunt also advanced in the singles draw Friday with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Eldad Campbell from Division II Abilene Christian. He later lost to No. 40 Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16.

In doubles action, Lewis and Lunt beat Bruno Rosa and Oscar Podlewski of Rice 8-5.

The event continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Aggies advance at USTA Wild Card Tournament: AUSTIN -- Texas A&M sophomore Alexis Klegou and junior Kayvon Karimi picked up first-round victories at the USTA men's future singles wild card tournament Friday at the Polo Tennis & Fitness Club.

Klegou beat Mac Roy 6-3, 6-0, while Karimi won a third-set tiebreaker over Jon Robert Leonik.

Tournament play continues through Sunday.

Aggie freshman Urbina shines on opening day of tournament: MIDLAND -- The Texas A&M women's tennis team won all three of its first-round doubles matches Friday, the first day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, but only one of six first-round singles matches.

Freshman Nazari Urbina, the No. 7 singles seed, was the only bright spot for the Aggies in the first round of singles, as she defeated Shannon Mackenzie of North Texas, 6-1, 6-1. Urbina then defeated Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 6-2, 7-6, to advance to the Round of 16.

A&M's Stephanie Davidson, Christina Amo, Lauren Santacroce, Sheri Olivier and Ashley Turpin all suffered first-round setbacks in singles, but each rebounded with consolation first-round victories.

In doubles, Urbina and Olivier defeated Abilene Christian's Lauren White and Julia Mongin, 8-1. A&M's Lauren Santacroce and Stephanie Davidson teamed to defeat Kerryn Potgieter and Caroline Starck of Texas Tech, 8-2, and the Aggie duo of Ashely Turpin and Christina Amo defeated ACU's Jaclyn Walker and Dina Pavlin, 8-2, to advance to the Round of 16.

Play resumes Saturday and concludes Sunday with the championship matches.

Aggies to open Big 12 play at Texas Tech: The Texas A&M volleyball team will open its 20-match Big 12 schedule against Texas Tech in Lubbock at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Spirit Arena.

The Aggies (7-1) will host defending Big 12 co-champion No. 8 Nebraska at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Reed Arena.

Texas Tech (2-8, 0-1) opened Big 12 play earlier this week with a 3-0 loss to Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.
