GOLF

Hurley's 64 ties school record: SAN ANTONIO -- Texas A&M men's golfer John Hurley tied the school record with an 8-under 64 Sunday to help lift the No. 18 Aggies to a 10-stroke lead after two rounds of the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.

A&M (286-280--566) trailed No. 4 Texas (284-292--576) by two strokes after Sunday morning's opening round, but beat the Longhorns by 12 strokes in the afternoon to take a double-digit advantage into Monday's final round.

Hurley's 9-under total of 71-64--135 leads the individual standings by one stroke over Southern Methodist's Kelly Kraft (67-69 --136).

The junior tied the school record set by Bronson Burgoon last year at the Adams Cup of Newport. He recorded eight birdies and no bogeys, shooting 4-under 32 on each nine. Hurley narrowly missed making birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.

A&M senior Andrea Pavan (73-68--141) is tied for fifth, junior Nacho Elvira (70-74--144) is in 13th, sophomore Geoff Shaw (73-74--147) is tied for 19th and freshman Cameron Peck (72-79--151) is tied for 32nd.

Baylor is one shot behind Texas at 577, followed by SMU (584), Texas-Arlington (585), Lamar (587), Sam Houston State (588), Texas-San Antonio (598), Rice (599), Texas State (599), Houston (610) and Texas-El Paso (620).

SOFTBALL

Last fall games Monday: The Texas A&M softball team closes out its fall schedule with a 5 p.m. Monday doubleheader against McLennan at the Aggie Softball Complex.

There is no admission charge.

The Aggies (4-2) will play the best-of-3 Maroon and White Series on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (if necessary), with each game starting at 4 p.m.

TENNIS

Three teams reach doubles quarterfinals: WACO -- Three Texas A&M's women's doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

Fourth-seeded Elzé Potgieter and Nazari Urbina will face second-seeded Amanda Craddock and Krista Damico of Texas; Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Olivier will play Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan of North Texas; and Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce will face seventh seeded Vanja Corovic and Sarah Lancaster of Texas.

All matches will be at 10 a.m. Monday.

Potgieter and Urbina advanced by defeating Rebekka Hanle and Varsha Shiva Shankar of Rice, 8-2; and Bianca Discordia and Leanne Mascall of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 8-1. Davidson and Olivier defeated Nikola Matovicova and Katarina Micochova of UTA, 8-4; Claudia Hidalgo and Chanelle McGregor of SMU, 8-0; and eighth-seeded Julie Chao and Ana Guzman of Rice, 8-5. Frank and Santacroce defeated Sarah Adams and Micaela Silva of Texas-San Antonio, 8-2; and fourth-seeded Kayla Duncan and Katarina Tuohimaa of TCU, 8-3.

A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson and Ashley Turpin reached the round of 16 before losing to Corovic and Lancaster, 8-5. Cuthbertson and Turpin defeated Nicole Briceno and Shahazoda Hatamova of SMU, 8-5; and Natalie Leitch and Stefanie Peana of Texas Tech.

In singles, Potgieter, Davidson and Frank each were eliminated in the round of 16 in the main draw.

Potgieter, the No. 7 seed, beat Mirna Cicak of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 before losing to Texas' Damico, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Frank defeated Irina Paraschiv of North Texas, 6-1, 7-6 (3), but lost to second-seeded Marta Lesniak of SMU, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2. Davidson defeated Karolina Filipiak of Baylor, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4, before falling to No. 8 seed Nina Secerbegovic of Baylor, 6-2, 6-0.

In the singles consolation bracket, Urbina picked up two victories to reach the quarterfinals of the west bracket. She faces UT's Abby Liu at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Santacroce picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Cicak, and Olivier got the win after Guzman retired in the second set with an injury.

Cuthbertson dropped a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7) match to Joanna Kacprzyk of Houston in the first round of the west consolation, but came back for a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alina Shazhko of Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the south bracket.
