STILLWATER, Okla. -- The fourth-ranked Texas A&M softball team suffered its first Big 12 loss of the season but rebounded in Game 2 to split a doubleheader with Oklahoma State on Wednesday at Cowgirl Stadium.
Riding an 11-game winning streak to open Big 12 play, the Aggies tried rallying but couldn't catch the Cowgirls in a 6-5 loss in Game 1. A&M senior Megan Gibson (25-1) also suffered her first loss of the season, giving up six runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings.
But in Game 2, A&M took a three-run lead in the second inning and held on for a 4-3 victory. Gibson went 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Rhiannon Kliesing (11-4) earned the victory in the circle, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings.
"That first game was really disappointing," A&M head coach Jo Evans said. "I think our kids played really tight. When you score five runs, you ought to win."
Gibson struck out six in Game 1 but gave way to Kliesing, who pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
"Gibson struggled today. That was the bottom line," Evans said. "I thought she pitched tight and just didn't look comfortable. Give Oklahoma State a lot of credit. They came out and were very aggressive and really swung the bat looking to hit every time up."
Kim Kaye and Jessica Meza hit home runs in Game 1 for Oklahoma State (22-20, 5-5).
A&M (40-7, 12-1 Big 12) will host Kansas at 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
