Aggie women advance to NCAA Championship

AUSTIN -- The No. 19 Texas A&M women's golf team carded a school-record even-par round of 288 at the UT Golf Club to finish fifth at the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday, earning the Aggies' fourth NCAA Championship berth in five years.

Sarah Zwartynski's 50-foot birdie putt on the final hole ended A&M's best final round in postseason history.

Zwartynski led the Aggies with a 3-under 69 for a 216 three-round total good for seventh place, the highest finish by an A&M freshman in NCAA regional competition.

A&M sophomore Ashley Freeman shot a career-best 1-under 71, while sophomore Danielle McVeigh used three birdies on the back nine to finish with a 72. Junior Lauren Johnson shot 76, and senior Miranda Orr had a 77.

UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe and Purdue's Maria Hernandez tied for medalist honors at 208.

Eight teams advanced from the regional. UCLA won at 861 followed by Purdue (871), Denver (882), TCU (884), A&M (885), Alabama (896), Texas (899) and LSU (902).

Those eight schools will join qualifiers from the East and West Regionals for the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 20-23.
