EQUESTRIAN

Aggies open national show with big victory: WACO -- Texas A&M's hunter seat squad opened the Varsity Equestrian National Championships with a 7-1 victory over Delaware State in the first round Thursday at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex.

A&M's Lindsay Smith, Kristi Waldal, Erin Ivy and Brooke Coleman each earned victories to pace the fence riders to a 4-0 shutout of the Hornets.

"The fence girls were solid," A&M hunter seat coach Linzy Woolf said. "Our team has high expectations and we did a good job of starting off on the right foot. We're looking forward to getting out there and taking care of business tomorrow."

On the flat, A&M's Christina Heine, Christina Matz and Brittney Dodson earned victories.

But in the quarterfinals, Baylor opened a 3-1 lead over fences in a match that will resume at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Meanwhile, the Aggies' top-seeded western team rode to a 3-0 lead over New Mexico State in the quarterfinals. Randi Standley, Caroline Gunn and Katie Lisabeth each won horsemanship matches to set up Friday's reining portion of the quarterfinals.
