Van Zandt named finalist for Nelson Award: NORMAN, Okla. -- Texas A&M senior Matt Van Zandt has been named a finalist for the Byron Nelson Award, the school announced Tuesday.
Candidates for the award must be graduating seniors.
Van Zandt is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 member and an Academic All-American. He is third on A&M's team this season with a 74.00 stroke average.
Other finalists included Missouri's Peter Malnati, South Dakota State's Trent Peterson, Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale and Marquette's Mike Van Sickle.
SOFTBALL
Aggies sweep Big 12 weekly awards: Texas A&M's Rhiannon Kliesing and Rebecca Arbina swept the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week awards.
Kliesing earned the player award for helping A&M beat Texas in Austin and Baylor in Waco over the weekend. The sophomore also hit a solo home run against Kansas during the week, finishing the three games with a .500 batting average, .875 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage while playing flawless first base with 16 putouts and two assists with no errors.
Arbino earned two complete-game victories in the circle, posting a 1.00 ERA while notching her 10th and 11th victories of the year.
Sixth-seeded A&M will face third-seeded Baylor at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City.
TRACK & FIELD
Reid earns Big 12 weekly honor: Texas A&M sophomore Julian Reid earned the Big 12's Male Athlete of the Week award after leading the Aggies to a 1-2-3 sweep of the triple jump at the Texas Invitational over the weekend.
Reid leapt a school record 54 feet, 10.25 inches to break the 14-year-old A&M record of 54-6.75 set by Kendrick Smith at the Southwest Conference meet in 1995.
Colorado's Jenny Barringer won the women's award for the second straight week after breaking the collegiate record in the 5,000 meters by finishing in 15 minutes, 7.64 seconds.
