A&M women at West Regional: The 13th-seeded Texas A&M women's golf team will be looking for its fifth NCAA finals berth in the last six years when the Aggies begin play in the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional on Thursday at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament runs through Saturday.
The top eight teams and two individuals from each of the three regionals will advance to the championship finals May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The East regional will be in Gainesville, Fla., and the Central regional will be in Columbus, Ohio.
The Aggies are making their ninth straight regional appearance and their 14th in the last 15 seasons. A&M placed fifth at last year's Central Regional in Austin. The Aggies were sixth at nationals, the program's best finish since 1982.
The West Regional includes top-ranked Arizona State, No. 3 Southern Cal and No. 10 Louisiana State. Other teams are Pepperdine, Arkansas, San Jose State, Arizona, California, UC Irvine, San Francisco, UNLV, TCU, Oregon, Long Beach State, Colorado, Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Northern Arizona and Oral Roberts.
Playing for A&M will be senior Lauren Johnson, junior Ashley Freeman and sophomores Sarah Zwartynski, Alexa Porter and Stephanie Smith.
"Going back to ASU is a great thing for us," second-year head coach Trelle McCombs said. "We are taking the momentum we built at the Big 12 tournament into regionals. But having a 'survival' mindset will not get us through to nationals; we have to go in with the mindset of winning. That is the only way to approach it. If we play with the heart we showed in Lubbock, we shouldn't have any problems."
TENNIS
Pollock, Krajicek, Denton honored: Texas A&M senior Conor Pollock and sophomore Austin Krajicek made the All-Big 12 men's tennis team in singles and doubles. A&M's Steve Denton shared Coach of the Year honors with Baylor's Matt Knoll.
Pollock earned all-conference in singles for the third straight year, while Krajicek is a repeater from last year. Krajicek is a team-leading 17-5 in dual matches. The All-Americans were unanimous selections in singles.
Krajicek and Pollock also earned all-conference doubles honors for the second time. They are 18-4 in dual matches.
A&M (15-8, ranked 15th) was 5-1 in league play, finishing second to unbeaten Baylor.
