Texas A&M basketball recruit Tobi Oyedeji put up some impressive numbers his senior season at Houston Bellaire. His 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks a game were enough to get him selected to the TABC all-state team.
It was a different set of numbers that impressed the national board of another team of all-stars.
Oyedeji kept his grade-point average above 3.0 throughout his stay at Bellaire, and that stat along with his basketball skills warranted a selection to Saturday's High School Academic All-American Game in Azusa, Calif.
"I was really excited when coach [Bruce Glover] told me I'd been selected to play in the game last Thursday," said Oyedeji, who arrived in California on Thursday. "I'm excited my hard work paid off and I get to show it here against some really good players."
It's the second season for the all-star game, which included North Carolina's David and Travis Waer, Missouri's Michael Dixon, Baylor's Nolan Dennis, Georgia Tech's Glenn Rice Jr., UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt and Syracuse's DaShonte Riley in its inaugural game.
This year at least 20 of the 30 players selected to play Saturday have signed with NCAA Division I schools.
The student-athletes also are selected for the game based on their SAT/ACT scores, strength of high school curriculum, college selection, community service involvement and extra curricular activities.
Bellaire went 35-2 during the 6-foot-9 Oyedeji's senior season. It ended in a loss to eventual state champion Fort Bend Bush in the playoffs.
Oyedeji also made the Houston Chronicle's All-Greater Houston first team.
Oyedeji, who plans on majoring in engineering at A&M, is one of two Texans in Saturday's game. Prestonwood Christian's Jason Posphical also will play.
One other Big 12 signee is in the game -- Kansas' Royce Woolridge.
While in California, Oyedeji will attend workshops concerning life matters such as financial planning, managing athletics and academics in college and preparing for professional basketball after college.

NOTES -- Donald Sloan continues to work out for NBA teams, the latest being the Rockets. He also said he has been called back by a couple of teams for a second workout. ... There has been no word yet on whether Derrick Roland will receive a medical redshirt and get to play for A&M next season. ... Andrew Darko, who played some key minutes for the Aggies down the stretch because of the injury to point guard Dash Harris, has been unable to do individual workouts this spring after surgery for a sports hernia. ... Harris has been wearing a soft cast on his right wrist. He had tendentious, then injured it while taking a bad fall against Texas.
