Texas A&M completed a tournament-record 2-over 290 on Saturday to take a seven-stroke lead after the first round of the rain-shortened "Mo"Morial Invitational at Traditions Golf Club.

Saturday's second round was canceled. The final round is set to start at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Rain forced officials to suspend play late in the first round Friday with A&M holding a one-stroke lead over Tulane. When the teams completed the first round Saturday morning, A&M gained five shots on Tulane on the par-4 17th alone and finished four strokes better in the previous tournament record of 294 set by A&M in 1998 at Pebble Creek Country Club.

"The girls handled the weather situation well," A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "They just played steady and are very comfortable out there right now regardless of the conditions."

A&M transfer Julia Bond and true freshman Sarah Beth Davis share the individual lead after shooting 2-under 70s. Tulane's Janine Fellows is in third place at 72.

A&M freshman Chloe Garner and junior Sarah Zwartynski are tied for eighth at 75, while senior Ashley Freeman is tied for 23rd after shooting a 78.

"They've done a great job of sticking to their game plan, and that's a big key to playing this golf course," McCombs said. "They have lot of confidence right now, but at the same time we know a seven-stroke lead is not much."

Boland, the top-ranked amateur in Australia, had four birdies and two bogeys in her A&M debut. Her four birdies came over a five-hole stretch on Friday.

"Coming out this morning, Julia just kept making pars and giving herself chances," McCombs said. "She is a very consistent player, and I was pleased with her round, especially under the conditions."
