Aggie women in fourth at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Texas A&M junior Kristen Heiss earned the women's highest individual NCAA finish in school history by taking third in the 500-yard freestyle to help lead the Aggies into fourth after Day 1 of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

Day 2 of the three-day event is set to start with preliminaries at 11 a.m. Friday.

Heiss finished the 500 freestyle in a Big 12 record time of 4 minutes, 40.03 seconds. Florida's Caroline Burckle broke Janet Evans' 18-year-old NCAA record of 4:34.39 by finishing in 4:33.60 to win the race.

Arizona leads the team standings with 151 points while two-time defending champion Auburn is second at 132. California is in third place with 89 points, just a point ahead of A&M.

A&M junior Julia Wilkinson placed fifth in the 200 individual medley, earning the highest NCAA finish of her career with a Big 12 record time of 1:55.45. Auburn sophomore Ava Ohlgren won in 1:53.94.

A&M junior Triin Aljand took fifth in the 50 freestyle in 22.06.

A&M's 200 freestyle relay team of Triin Aljand, Sarah Woods, Maria Sommer and Marissa Jasek placed sixth in 1:29.52.
