Senior guard Donald Sloan was named the most valuable player for the Texas A&M men's basketball team's at the Aggies' celebration banquet Sunday at Reed Arena.
The 6-foot-3 Sloan averaged 17.8 points per game and earned All-Big 12 honors in leading the Aggies to a second-place tie in the league last season. He helped the Aggies finish 24-10 and reach the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The MVP award is named after another A&M standout guard, Acie Law IV.
A&M President R. Bowen Loftin introduced head coach Mark Turgeon, who received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Senior forward Bryan Davis shared the Dominique Kirk Defensive Player of the Year Award with sophomore guard Dash Harris. The 6-9 Davis, who averaged 9.6 points and a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game, also won the Vernon Smith Rebound Award.
Senior Shawn Schepel won the Dr. Johnson Thornton Academic Award, and senior guard Derrick Roland won the Dr. Shelby Metcalf Most Inspirational Player Award. Roland, who was lost to a broken leg near the end of nonconference play, will try to get the NCAA to grant him another year of eligibility.
The team's seniors became the winningest class in the program's history.
Sophomore forward David Loubeau won the Sonny Parker Most Improved Player Award, and Harris won the David Edwards Assist Award.
Turgeon presented a Reed Rowdy Award to Matt Bates.
