FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Texas A&M women's 400-meter relay team beat the event's 20-year-old collegiate record with a world-leading time of 42.36 seconds to take the gold Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
A&M's Khrystal Carter, Porscha Lucas, Dominique Duncan and Gabby Mayo picked up 10 points for the Aggie women, who sat in sixth place in the team standings late Friday with 19 points. Oregon led with 39, followed by USC at 21. Texas, Arizona State and Florida State were tied for third with 20.
The previous record of 42.50 in the women's 400 relay was set by LSU during the 1989 NCAA Championships in Provo, Utah.
Florida State was well back in second with a 43.33 while South Carolina finished third in 43.41. Big 12 foes Oklahoma (43.58) and Baylor (43.77) placed fourth and fifth. LSU did not finish the race.
The victory was A&M's third straight in the championships.
In the men's 400 relay, the Aggies were third in qualifying but were disqualified in the final for passing the baton outside of the 200-meter zone on the last exchange.
Florida won in 38.58 with LSU second at 38.67. Clemson was third at 38.77.
In the women's 100, Lucas placed fourth in 11.31 and Mayo was fifth in 11.35.
In the men's 100, A&M's Gerald Phiri took third in 10.18 behind a 10.00 for LSU's Trindon Holliday and a 10.10 for USC's Ahmad Rashad.
The Aggie men have 13 points going into Saturday's action.
Also on Friday, four Aggies advanced to the final in the men's triple jump. Zuheir Sharif and Julian Reid each surpassed the auto qualifier of 16.30 meters, while Tyron Stewart and Melvin Echard earned a position by finishing seventh and 12th in qualifying.
Sharif led the qualifying group with a personal best of 54 feet, 4 inches (16.56) while Reid was third at 53-7 (16.33). Stewart hit a mark of 52-10.25 (16.11) while Echard leapt 52-0.5 (15.86) on his final attempt.
On the women's side, Mayo and Vashti Thomas reached the finals in 100 hurdles and Jessica Beard in the 400.
Bryan Oliver advanced to the finals in the men's 400.
In women's triple jump, A&M's Yasmine Regis advanced to the final with a mark of 44-1.25 (13.44). She was second best in her flight and fourth overall.
