Upon further review, we didn't have to look far to discover that our information on the frequency of a student-athlete winning four UIL state tennis championships was as bad as my backhand.
A check of the University Interscholastic League Web site found a list of four-time state champions that included four girls and two boys. According to that list, the last boy to win state four times was Ralph Sandell of Pyote, in 1960-63.
Based on that, our (and by our, I mean my) state tennis story said Franklin sensation Austin Klores was the first boy in 45 years to pull off the quadruple.
A couple of days later, a member of our sports staff bumped into a friend who said the 45 years part sounded wrong. This man said he played in the 1970s against a guy who won four state titles, a guy named Steve Denton.
Oops.
Although it's not on the list of four-time winners, Denton's name is there from 1972 through 1975. Wouldn't you know it? Now Denton coaches the Texas A&M men's tennis team, and he has signed Klores to play for him.
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.
After still further review, at least one other boy won state four times and wasn't on the list. Colter Williams of Rotan won the Class A crown from 2001 through 2004.
What does this mean in terms of Klores' accomplishment? Nothing. Whether he was the seventh, 11th or 17th person to pull it off, winning state all four years of high school makes Klores special.
Phillips still phast: Former A&M Consolidated distance runner Duncan Phillips was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after running a personal-best 1:49.65 in the 800 meters at the Arkansas Twilight meet.
The time qualified the University of Arkansas runner for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Only one freshman in the nation has a better 800 time this year, and Phillips leads all SEC freshmen.
Phillips ran with numerous All-Americans and current and former Razorbacks, finishing sixth overall.
The Razorbacks will compete in the SEC Championships at Auburn starting Thursday.
McNeill makes all-tournament: Freshman first baseman Molly McNeill made the Sun Belt Conference all-tournament team after helping Louisiana-Monroe reach the title game, where the Warhawks lost to Louisiana-Lafayette.
Earlier in the tourney, McNeill belted a three-run homer to help Louisiana-Monroe upset defending champion Florida Atlantic 5-4 in the first round. The A&M Consolidated product went 2 for 3 as the seventh-seeded Warhawks knocked off the No. 2 seed.
"That was about as clutch as you can get from Molly," ULM coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. "She has been somewhat injured, but didn't give in and was ready to respond. She came here to play."
Stiller moving up: Former Bryan pitcher Erik Stiller has been promoted to the Cleveland Indians' AA affiliate in Akron, Ohio. Stiller was pitching for the Indians' high Class A team in Kinston, N.C. There, Stiller pitched 19 1/3 innings with a 2.79 earned run average and 27 strikeouts.
Stiller pitched collegiately at Princeton.
Bohne earns honors: Former A&M Consolidated softball player Megan Bohne has earned All-Region honors in her first season at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Bohne was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's All-West Region first team as designated hitter. Bohne has batted .376 with three home runs and 36 RBIs to help UMHB go 32-9 and reach the NCAA Division III national championships for the first time.
She also was a first-team American Southwest Conference All-West Division choice as designated player. Earning first-team regional honors puts Bohne on the ballot for NFCA All-America recognition.
American Southwest honors BV players: Several players from Brazos Valley high schools were selected to the baseball honor teams for the American Southwest Conference this year.
The ASC participates in NCAA Division III.
Leading the way was relief pitcher John Scheuring of University of the Ozarks, who earned second-team honors on the East Division team. Scheuring played at Bryan High School.
Two players earned honorable mention on the West Division team. Freshman Justin Beasley of Concordia, who played for Franklin, made the team as a utility player. He was joined by Texas Lutheran relief pitcher Robert Conley from Cameron.
Beasley started in 35 games for the Tornadoes, playing second base and third base. He batted .358 with six home runs and 26 runs batted in. Beasley made the ASC all-tournament team at designated hitter with a .533 average in four games.
All-BV nominations needed: Area softball and baseball coaches are asked to submit their nominations for The Eagle's All-Brazos Valley teams as soon as possible after their seasons end.
Coaches should nominate their players in order of preference, including all pertinent statistics and honors. Nominations should include each player's classification and position.
The All-Brazos Valley teams will include academic honor squads. Nominations for those teams should include academic statistics such as GPA, class rank and other honors.
The Eagle also will publish the all-district teams from all of the area leagues, so coaches are asked to submit those lists, too.
Nominations and all-district teams can be e-mailed to sports@theeagle.com or faxed to 979-776-8923.
