Brenham 28, Huntsville 0

HUNTSVILLE -- The third-ranked Brenham Cubs opened their defense of the Class 4A Region III crown with exactly that -- a whole lot of defense.

Brenham forced four turnovers -- including an interception that senior defensive end Christian McBride returned 28 yards for a touchdown -- in a 28-2 victory over the Huntsville Hornets at Bowers Stadium.

Huntsville, which averaged less than 2 yards per carry and finished with 167 yards of total offense, scored its only points of the night when its defense stopped Brenham running back Troy Green in the end zone for a safety.

But Green had the last laugh, breaking to the outside for a 68-yard touchdown on the Cubs' next possession. That score would give the Cubs a 14-2 lead heading into the second quarter, and Green would finish the night with 144 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

Brenham opened its 2010 season with a bang, forcing Huntsville to punt before marching 52 yards for its first touchdown of the season. After four consecutive carries by Green, the Cubs took to the air, as quarterback Ty Schlottmann connected with Texas Tech commit Derek Edwards for 8 yards before finding Tre'mund Moore on a 22-yard fade route in the end zone.

The game marked Brenham's first contest since playing for the Class 4A Division II state championship in December.

Caldwell 26, Bellville 0
