SAN ANTONIO -- Bryan wrestler Javier Aguilar won a regional championship Saturday, earning his second trip to the state meet and leading a group of four Vikings who qualified for state.
Aguilar, a junior, won all four matches during the two-day Region 4 tournament at the Blossom Athletic Center, claiming the title at 125 pounds.
Bryan's Omar Aguilar, Thomas Forster and David Orozco also qualified for the state meet. Omar Aguilar grabbed second place at 171 pounds, while Forster took fourth at 160 and Orozco finished fifth but won a wrestle-back match to punch his ticket to state.
The state meet will be held at the Delco Center in Austin on Feb. 22-23.
"We had six guys make it to the second day, and five of the six placed," Bryan coach Mike Zito said. "That's pretty impressive with 54 teams in the region."
Bryan 103-pounder Logan Meekma advanced to the second day and went 2-2, making the top eight.
Javier Aguilar qualified for last year's state meet at 112 pounds. His older brother Louis also made state.
"Javier is very aggressive, in shape and ready to go," Zito said. "He was ready for this. It was his turn. He'd watched his older brother place at state in the past, but his brother didn't place at regionals. He's looking forward to calling his brother who's in the Marine Corps overseas right now."
Omar Aguilar defeated the second and third seeds to reach the finals. Against the third seed, Aguilar trailed 15-5 with about a minute left in the match when he pinned his opponent.
"Omar was probably the most amazing one," Zito said. "He is a little unorthodox. When you look at him, you would swear he was a basketball player. He's 6-foot-4, tall and lanky. I think a lot of those football-player type guys overlook him."
Forster, a junior, earned his first trip to the state meet by winning four of six matches at regionals.
Senior Orozco went 3-2 and finished fifth, but he did not face the fourth-place finisher in the regular draw. Orozco got a wrestle-back match, which he won 8-3 to make state.
The Vikings finished sixth in the team standings with 99.5 points. Austin Bowie was the regional champion with 189.5 points, followed by Austin Westlake at 133 and Vista Ridge with 125.
