Six games in three days probably seems like bad news to some softball teams, but not to the Bryan Lady Vikings.
Bryan is scheduled to play six games at the San Antonio Alamo Heights tournament Thursday through Saturday, and Lady Vikings coach Enrique Luna welcomes the workload.
Bryan will be playing its final tournament later than some schools, so the Lady Vikings have gotten in fewer games than many teams. They are 8-5 after splitting six games at the Fort Bend Elkins tournament last weekend.
By comparison, A&M Consolidated has played 18 games.
"This weekend will be big for us, because we really need to play some more games," Luna said. "We're hitting the ball well right now. Defensively, we've got to be more consistent. I think we're up over 30 [errors] in 13 games, which is rare for a Bryan team. I think we can fix it. We're still moving kids to different positions, and that's been part of the problem."
The teams that beat Bryan last weekend -- Pearland, Brazoswood and Elkins -- had a combined record of 16-2 in the tournament, losing only to each other.
Alamo Heights' seven-team round-robin will include defending Class 3A state champion Medina Valley as well as Midlothian, which is coached by former Texas A&M star Jennifer McFalls.
Consol's Hicks not satisfied with fourth: A&M Consolidated finished fourth in last weekend's tournament in Corpus Christi, going 4-2.
Consol coach Billy Hicks believed the Lady Tigers could have done better. They had a relatively easy pool but lost bracket games to New Braunfels 3-0 and Tuloso-Midway 2-1.
"It was disappointing in a way, because I felt like we probably had one of the top two teams there," Hicks said.
Unlike his crosstown rival, Hicks hopes his team won't have to play this weekend. Consol's game at Temple on Monday was rained out and rescheduled for Thursday night, when there is a chance of more bad weather.
Hicks said there is a chance the game could be moved to Consol's Lady Tiger Field for better field conditions to avoid postponing the game again. Hicks wants his team to rest this weekend before playing two huge games next week during spring break, against Bryan on Thursday at Texas A&M and at Belton on Friday.
Cubettes keep on winning: The Brenham Cubettes were the only Brazos Valley team to reach the state softball tournament last season, and the winning ways continue this year despite a new-look lineup.
Brenham is 16-1 going into its district opener at home against Huntsville on Thursday. The Cubettes are rolling despite losing their No. 1 pitcher, starting catcher, a four-year starter in the outfield and their double-play combination from last season's team.
"We were a little shell-shocked coming into the season," coach Wade Wilson said. "We made the schedule where we were going to have some success, but I never expected we would get off to the start we did."
Even though Wilson made his nondistrict schedule easier, the Cubettes haven't spent the first two months beating up on The Eagle's company team. Brenham has beaten Conroe Oak Ridge, Giddings and Round Rock Westwood, whose pitcher has signed with LSU. The Cubettes' loss was to defending 5A state champion Katy.
Brenham has several players in new, key roles, including pitchers Carly Becker and Kaci Federwisch, a sophomore who is 7-1 and has carried more of the load in the last couple of weeks with Becker sidelined by an injury.
Sophomore Emily Albus has moved from center field to shortstop and earned high praise from Wilson.
"She's hitting over .600 right now, and she's the real deal," Wilson said. "She's probably the most talented player I've ever coached."
