Caldwell sloppy in state loss to Monahans

SAN MARCOS -- Caldwell surpassed most expectations by reaching the state volleyball tournament, but the Lady Hornets' playoff run ended when they passed tense against Monahans.

The second-ranked Lady Loboes took advantage of Caldwell's poor passing to blast past the Lady Hornets 25-18, 25-20, 25-10 in a Class 3A semifinal match Friday afternoon before a crowd of 1,174 at the Strahan Coliseum.

Caldwell, which made a surprising return to the state tournament in a rebuilding year, finished the season at 31-13.

Monahans will attempt to win its 10th state title -- and first since 2004 -- when the Lady Loboes (41-5) play defending 3A champion Lucas Lovejoy (41-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Hornets reached the state tournament for the seventh time in program history with a lineup that featured 6-foot-2 middle blocker Sondra Flippin and a scrappy supporting cast. Caldwell won 16 of 17 matches on its way to San Marcos, using solid play to knock off several teams with more size and experience.

On Friday, the Lady Hornets were not consistent enough to muster much scrappiness.

"That definitely wasn't our team," coach Jane Anne Giese said. "You get into the coliseum and you're caught up in the moment sometimes. We just didn't show up."

Caldwell wasn't able to pass well enough to show much fight. Receiving errors tormented the Lady Hornets throughout the 63-minute match, often preventing Caldwell's setters from connecting with Flippin and fellow middle blocker Vantazia Jackson.

"All year, our serve-receive has been fairly consistent," Giese said. "It fell apart today. We are a team that predominantly uses our middles [on offense]. When you use your middles, you have to have ball control. When our ball control fell apart, there was no way we could run the offense that we wanted to run."

Monahans scored five consecutive points midway through the first game to take the lead for good. Outside hitter Amy Rose delivered six of her match-high 14 kills during Game 1, which ended appropriately on a ball-handling error by Caldwell.

The Lady Loboes kept the pressure on in the second game, delivering serves that were solid rather than spectacular, but still too much for Caldwell.

"We had heard that they would be an effective team if they could pass and run their offense," Monahans coach Patty Dominguez said. "We knew we needed to be very aggressive about what we were doing [serving] and go after it."

Giese used two setters, but starter Allison Alford and reserve Mariah Landolt both spent too much time chasing down errant passes. The Lady Hornets wound up sending way too many free balls over the net, which allowed Monahans setter Erin Fisher to choose from among several attackers.

After a kill by senior Melissa Cumby, Landolt came off the bench for back-to-back aces that pulled Caldwell within 23-20 in Game 2. However, Dominguez called a timeout and the Lady Loboes steadied to take the next two points.

Caldwell stayed in striking distance only a short time in the third game, trailing 9-6 before Monahans took six consecutive points. The Lady Loboes closed the match by winning the last seven points, a stretch that included three Caldwell errors and two kills by Rose.

"We didn't click at all," Cumby said. "Once that one error happened [on a play], it seemed like we couldn't bring ourselves back up, and we normally can."

Flippin, a junior, led Caldwell with six kills, while LeeAnn Simpson and Cumby had four apiece. Ashlee Hollis made 11 digs, while Alford had 11 assists.

Fisher dished out 30 assists for Monahans, which got 12 kills from Kristi Holly.
