David Campbell's Track & Field Report: 13-5A boys get started Thursday

The varsity boys open the District 13-5A track meet Thursday with the long jump at Temple's Wildcat Stadium. The start time at the long jump pit is 10 a.m.

The meet, which will also include freshman and JV competitions, has three boys field events set for the first day. The pole vault starts at 11:15 a.m. with the shot put at 12:30 a.m.

Thursday running preliminaries open at 3 p.m. The only running event final is the 3,200-meters, which follows the running prelims.

All Friday competition will be held in an afternoon session. The boys triple jump is at 1, with the high jump at 2:15 and the discus at 3:30.

Running finals begin with the 400 relay at 5 p.m.

Seawood's triple jump wins: The A&M Consolidated Tigers tuned up for the 13-5A meet at the Klein Relays, where Marcus Seawood's 44 feet, 8 inches won the triple jump. Taylor Reynolds took silver in the shot put (50-8) and threw 146-9 for third in the discus. Morrell Munyon was third in the 800 in 2 minutes, 1.25 seconds.

The Tigers emphasized their strength in the distance races with a second-place finish in the 4x1,600 relay. Munyon, Chris Florian, Jesse Hall and Stephen Case ran 18:46.63 in the event that will not be held at district.

Bryan second at Killeen: The Bryan boys finished second to Killeen at the Kangaroo Relays on Friday.

A pair of Bryan Vikings took the top two spots in the 200. Andre Carter ran 22.14, finishing just ahead of teammate Tre Odom's 22.17. Bryan's Fono Vakalahi swept the throwing events, winning the shot put at 55-1 and the discus at 157-61/2. Teammate Elton Holmes was third in the discus (142-113/4).

Also for Bryan, Mikey Piatt cleared 12-0 in the pole vault to win, while Perry Fisher was a silver medalist in the 400 in 50.67. Bryan finished 2-3 in the 110 hurdles. Michael Mims ran 14.65 to edge out Robert Robinson (14.66). The Vikings' 800 relay was third in 1:30.42. Michael Mims' 6-2 high jump placed third.

Phillips named to all-SEC freshman team: Arkansas freshman Duncan Phillips, an A&M Consolidated graduate, was named to the 2008 SEC Indoor Track and Field all-freshman team.

Despite competing with a groin injury, Phillips finished eighth in the mile with a time of 4:09.62. Phillips finished in 4:09.40 in the prelims.

Brenham runs at Texas Relays: Adjusted district track meet dates have cut into the Brazos Valley area's high school participation at the Texas Relays.

Brenham's qualifiers will get to compete in Austin this weekend just before their district meet, which is set for Monday and Tuesday at Montgomery. Luke Poehlmann (shot put), D'Anthony Manley (110 hurdles), Leonard Charles and Braxtyn Smith (100) and the Cubs' 1,600 relay and distance medley relay teams are qualified for the Texas Relays.

Brenham's boys recently dominated their own Bluebonnet Relays, scoring 234 points.

All three relay teams won for the Cubs, who ran 42.22 in the sprint relay, 1:27.20 in the 800 relay and 3:21.33 in the 1,600 relay.

Other home-town gold medal winners included Poehlmann in the shot put (54-61/2) and discus (151-0), Will Anktowiak in the 3,200 (9:49.21) and 1,600 (4:33.65), Justin Preuss in the 400 (50.93) and Manley (39.85) in the 300 hurdles.
