The Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) holds its state track meet at the same site as the Class 5A Region II UIL meet -- Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track -- but by comparison, the regional meet seems almost like a leisurely stroll to the finish.
If you want wall-to-wall, continuous track, the TAPPS meet is the one for you. There is competition among all classifications. There's even a printed schedule, which is designed to give athletes a chance to rest, but usually it is a non-stop affair.
After watching girls and boys compete in the 12 800-meter relays, stretching from Class 1A to 6A, fans might need some rest. The athletes have plenty of time between events.
The first field event Friday starts at 8:30 a.m. The last one of the day begins at 5:45 p.m. The gun is fired on the first of the 3,200-meter runs at 6 p.m.
There's no break in the running schedule Saturday, which opens with 1A girls in the 400 relay at 9 a.m. Barring delays, the 1,600 relay is scheduled to begin at 3:50. There's no lunch break, but you can bet concessions will be available.
TAPPS qualification is different from the UIL, too. In 1A, 4A and 6A, there is no regional qualification, with the top two in each district moving on to state.
The other classes have regional competition (divided into north and south). St. Joseph sophomore Chad Peevey qualified for three events that way. He was second in the 200 at 24.69 seconds and had a triple jump of 38 feet, 8 1/4 inches for third place. Peevey also teamed with Alec Castilleja, Jae-Min Shin and DeVodrick Brown on St. Joseph's third-place 400 relay team, which ran 46.26 at regional.
Castilleja will also compete in the triple jump after a third-place leap of 19-3. Brown, also a sophomore, qualified second in the 100 with a time of 11.37.
Normangee quartet qualifies: The Normangee Panthers again sent a relay team to state from the Class A Region IV track meet held at Sam Houston State. The 800 relay team of Justin Mullinnix, Landon Hodges, Dillon Wolfe and Jordan Mullunnix ran 1:30.25 to beat district opponent Chilton for the event win. Jordan Mullinnix also won a bronze medal in the 200 in 23.02.
Bremond's Johnathan White won the 800 title by running 2:01.88. Teammate LiDarral Bailey was second in the 300 hurdles in a time of 40.19. Shot putter Rickie Williams, another important member of the Tigers' state finalist football team, threw 46-8 3/4 to place second and qualify for the state meet.
Anderson-Shiro's Cody Aikin advanced to state by winning the high jump over Flatonia's Sean Masek. Both jumpers cleared 6-4.
Taylor carries 3A banner: Madisonville's Brock Taylor will compete at state in the 100-meter dash. He ran 11.11, finishing second behind another 19-3A athlete, Gavan Bass of Fairfield.
Taylor is also the state alternate in two jumps despite a strong showing. He jumped 23-1 in the long jump, just an inch off the state-qualifying leap of Bass. Taylor's third-place triple jump was 46-7, breaking his own school record by 11 inches.
Brenham takes 4A Region III title: Brenham scored 76 points to win the 4A Region III boys championship.
Luke Poehlmann won the shot put with a throw of 55-7. The Cubs' winning 1,600 relay team ran a season-best 3:19.36. Kendrell Washington, Quenten Chapel, Tito Mathis and Kendrick Washington made up that team.
The Cubs helped their team total with a trio of bronze medal finishes. The 800 relay was third in 1:28.45, Justin Preuss medaled in the 800 (1:58.56), and D'Anthony Stewart-Manley took bronze in the 300 hurdles (39.90).
Hutson clears hurdle to state: Clint Hutson nabbed the silver medal for Lexington in the 110-meter hurdles in San Marcos. Hutson ran 15.16. He also earned a pair of bronze medals in the long jump at 21-11 1/2 . He ran on the Eagles' state-alternate 400 relay team that was timed in 43.22. Andrew Woldrige threw 58-4 3/4 in the shot put but was edge out for second place. Had Woldrige thrown that at the Class 5A Region II meet, he would have been the champion.
