Focus is now on regionals

Regional qualifier meets served as warmups for area athletes before facing their toughest competition of the year at regional meets. The goal now is to advance to the finals with one of the eight best times this Friday.

At Baylor's qualifier meet, Bryan scored 32 points and finished sixth in the team standings.

Andre Carter was fifth (22.43 seconds) and Tre Odom eighth (22.60) in the 200 meters. Teammate C.J. Demouchette was eighth in 100 at 11.13. Bryan's sprint relay ran 42.18, good for fifth place, while the 800 relay finished third with a time of 1:27.95.

Jaron Gentry triple jumped 45 feet, 5 1/4 inches for third place.

In Brenham, the hometown Cubs won the 800 relay in 1:27.53. Luke Poehlmann was second in the shot put in his home ring, but eclipsed the 60-foot mark with a throw of 60-4 1/4. The Cubs' David Wells (9:54.39) also grabbed silver with his performance in the 3,200, and Will Antkowiak was the runner-up in the 1,600 at 4:28.97.

Madisonville's Brock Taylor was one of the meet's stars. He won the 100 in 10.86, edging several 5A competitors, and was second in the triple jump (45-8) and the long jump (22-2 1/2).

Favorable schedule at 3A-Region III meet: The Class 3A-Region III meet at Humble's Turner Stadium has a challenging day of qualifying Friday, but reaching the finals might be easier than at many of the other meets.

Most of the 3A field events are scheduled for Friday. The running prelims are set for 1 p.m. Friday, with the 3,200 meter final at 3:25. It's a single session of 3A events, concluding with the 1,600 relay prelims at 3:55. At 6, the 5A-Region III athletes take the track for prelims.

On Saturday, the two meets are blended into one. A final heat of the 3A boys' 400, for instance, is followed by a heat of the 5A boys' 400. It's great for athletes in multiple events, as they'll get more rest between races.

San Houston State now hosts a combined event, with Class A-Region IV and 4A-Region III both in action.

Season winding down: After this weekend, only the UIL State Track and Field Meet and a handful state qualifier meets remain. Most competitors won't run in those qualifiers.

Here are the sites of the regional meets involving Brazos Valley UIL teams (all meets are Friday and Saturday):

Class 5A-Region II -- Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track, Waco.

4A-Region III -- Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium, Huntsville.

3A-Region III -- Humble High School's Turner Stadium.

2A-Region III -- Palestine High School's Wildcat Stadium.

2A-Region IV -- Texas State's Bobcat Stadium, San Marcos.

Class A-Region III -- Stephen F. Austin's Homer Bryce Stadium.

Class A-Region IV -- Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium, Huntsville.
