Former Texas A&M student and judo club member Daniel Gomez is expected to be among the athletes competing in the 2008 United States Olympic Trials in June.
Gomez finished third at the 2007 Benito Juarez Championships in Mexico and was fifth at the Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., three weeks ago.
"Although we have not yet named the athletes for the Trials, officially, Gomez will qualify," said Nicole Jomantas, director of communications and media relations for U.S. Olympic Judo.
There will be 112 athletes at the Trials with eight expected to compete in Gomez's 60kg division, Jomantas said.
Gomez might be back at A&M this fall to work on his graduate degree.
