Franklin girls showing versatility

Already known for their ability to get around the softball basepaths, Franklin's girls proved they know their way around the track at the District 26-2A meet.

Franklin freshman Janie Neyland led the Lady Lions, scoring 31 points to earn the honor of top athlete in the varsity girls division. Neyland finished one point ahead of Lexington's Nicole Koch.

Neyland qualified for the Class 2A Region III meet in the triple jump, 100 meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay. The relay unit includes Kim Boller, Amanda Garney and Kayce Walker. Neyland, Walker and Garney are members of Franklin's top-ranked softball team, which features Baylor signee Walker at pitcher.

The other Franklin girls who earned the right to compete at the regional meet in San Marcos are Colleen Cox in the pole vault, Kendra Casey in the 3,200 meters, Candace Bourque in the high jump and Samantha Bates in the discus.

Moore wins prep race: Bryan senior Pashe Moore won the 100-meter hurdles at the regional qualifiers meet hosted by Baylor in Waco. Moore will return to the Hart-Patterson Track this week for the Class 5A Region II championships.

Moore posted a comfortable win in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds. Cathryn Rittenberry of Carthage was second in 15.21.

In the 300 hurdles, Moore finished eighth in 46.05.

Bryan's 400 relay team of Moore, Marissa Perry, Ashley Maxwell and Shelby McGee was sixth with a time of 48.48.

Cameron, Rockdale get ready: The girls from Cameron and Rockdale competed against several schools from larger classifications at Baylor's regional qualifiers meet to prepare for the Class 3A Region III championships to be held at Humble High School.

The Lady Yoe of Cameron were strong in the distance events, with Madison Pevehouse producing the top finish among area 3A athletes by taking fifth place in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:06.40.

Brenda Pena finished seventh in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:30.45. Guadalupe Bustamante was 11th in 5:35.95.

For Rockdale, Krysten Brooks took sixth place in the 100 hurdles at 15.77.

Cubettes fare well at home meet: Brenham's Haley Peddy and Chantel Bratton won their specialties as Brenham hosted its annual regional qualifiers meet last week.

Peddy, a junior, finished first in the 3,200 meters with a clocking of 11:22.89.

Bratton, a senior who is seeking a return trip to the UIL state meet, won the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

Consol vaulters tops at The Woodlands: Pole vaulters Samantha Villacin and Kris Wulfson of A&M Consolidated went a foot higher than the rest of the field at The Woodlands regional qualifiers meet.

Villacin and Wulfson both cleared 11-6, with Villacin taking first place and Wulfson second. Third place went to Ariana Poindexter of Atascocita at 10-6.

Whitney Harris gave the Lady Tigers another gold medal by winning the 400 meters with a time of 57.05. Consol's Keri Wood took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:59.96.
