BASKETBALL

Gilbert picked for All-America game: A&M Consolidated senior Karla Gilbert is among 20 players from across the nation selected to play in the 19th Annual WBCA High School All-America basketball game.

The all-star game will be played April 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, site of the NCAA Women's Final Four.

Consol's 6-foot-5 center has signed to play at Texas A&M.

Gilbert is one of five players from Texas chosen for the game. The others are Frisco's Tiffany Moore (who has signed with Texas), Cy-Fair's Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Cibolo's Meighan Simmons (Tennessee) and Irving MacArthur's Odyssey Sims (Baylor).

Last week, Gilbert received a certificate as a nominee to the McDonald's All-America team, which is expected to be officially announced this month.

Bryan closes regular season with victory: BELTON -- After clinching the District 12-5A title last weekend, the Bryan girls basketball team closed out the regular season with a 52-37 victory over Belton on Tuesday.

Bryan's Carlisha Wyatt led all scorers with 16 points and added 10 rebounds. Carlette Wyatt also scored in double-figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Gia Ayers added eight points and three assists.

Bryan will open bi-district play next week.

Consol falls to Cove in season finale: The A&M Consolidated girls basketball team lost 70-55 to Copperas Cove on Tuesday in the last game of the regular season for both teams.

Consol (12-18, 6-8 12-5A) was led by Karla Gilbert with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Teammate Tierra Tucker had 14 points, four steals and two assists.

St. Joseph wins first-round playoff game: The St. Joseph girls basketball team beat Concordia 43-30 in the bi-district round of the TAPPS 2A playoffs on Tuesday.

Maria Morrell led the Lady Eagles with 12 points, while Chelsey Watt had 10.

Consol boys beat Taylor: TAYLOR -- The A&M Consolidated Maroon boys powerlifting team took first place at the Taylor meet on Saturday.

Consol finished with 38 points, while Taylor had 36 and Round Rock had 32.

Consol's Zerrick Merchant was first in the 132-pound weight class, while JJ Bynum (275 pounds) and Cedrick McCan (165) also won.

Cade Walker (275) and Alleen Alley (105) finished second, while Dillon Smith (242), Wyatt Smith (super heavyweight) and Jackie Gonzalez (123) finished third. Aaron Terry (114) and Clinton Banks (220) took fourth, and Riley Martinez (148) was fifth.

SOCCER

Bryan beats Ellison at home: Led by senior Taylor Erickson's four points, the Bryan girls soccer team bounced back from two losses last week to beat Killeen Ellison 5-1 on Tuesday at Merrill Green Stadium.

Scoring goals for Bryan were Erickson, Sierra Garcia, Dani Fellows, Brittany Little and Jessica Chicas. Erickson had three assists, while Fellows, Little and Chicas each had one.

Bryan (10-5-1) will play at Consol at 7 p.m. Friday.

Consol gets comeback victory over Temple: Eddie Hernandez scored a goal with 40 seconds left, lifting the A&M Consolidated boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Temple on Tuesday at Tigerland Stadium.

Kolby Graff had the assist on Hernandez's goal. Consol's Ryan Armatys tied the score at 1-1 in the second half.

William Wright and Aaron Salin played well defensively for the Tigers, while Henry Denoux was in goal.

Consol's JV A team beat Temple 2-0, and the Consol JV B team won 3-0.

Consol (7-7, 4-0 12-5A) will travel to Bryan at 7 p.m. Friday.

Consol girls win road game against Temple: TEMPLE -- Freshman Grace Wright found the low right corner of the net midway through the first half for the game's only goal as the A&M Consolidated girls soccer team beat Temple 1-0 on Tuesday.

Consol's JV (3-0-1) tied with Temple, 1-1. Mary Beth Keating scored the Lady Tigers' only goal.

Consol (9-5, 4-0 12-5A) will host Bryan at 7 p.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

Texas Collegiate League's newest team finds home: The Brazos Valley Bombers' newest opponent will take them southwest to Interstate 10.

Owners of the Victoria Baseball Club, LLC, announced Tuesday that the Texas Collegiate League's new franchise, the Texas Tomcats, will be located in Weimar and will play its home games at Veterans Memorial Park.
