ATLANTA -- The NCAA Division I legislative council voted Thursday to prohibit schools from hiring anyone associated with a basketball recruit for a two-year period before or after the player enrolls at the school.
"I think it's a good rule," Texas A&M head men's basketball coach Mark Turgeon said. "I think they are trying really hard to get things cleaned up in college basketball. Hiring was an easy way to get players and some schools did it and some didn't do it, but it was becoming more of a common practice."
The council did not pass a proposal to limit who can be hired as basketball camp instructors.
Joe D'Antonio, the chairman of the council, says schools were concerned they would not be able to stage camps with a limited number of employees. D'Antonio says there is "overwhelming support" at the annual NCAA convention for other proposals to clean up basketball recruiting. The proposals may be voted on in April.
"I think it's good," said Turgeon, who is in his third year at A&M. "I think everything they try to do is going to be positive for college basketball."
The proposal passed by the council must be affirmed by the Division I board of directors.
