South Oak Cliff takes 4A title; Kennedale wins 3A title on last-second shot

AUSTIN -- The chants of "S-O-C!" echoed through the arena once again. South Oak Cliff players clutched the medals around their necks and their state championship trophy, reveling in a victorious "us-against-the-world" moment.

Four years of winning state titles never gets old. And when the entire season has been played under a cloud of investigation into years past, it's likely none felt better than this one.

Princeton Andrews' two free throws with 10 seconds left gave South Oak Cliff the lead and the Golden Bears hung on Saturday to win their fourth consecutive Class 4A state championship, 80-77 over Fort Worth Southwest.

"That's all we know, is to win state," said South Oak Cliff's senior center, J'Mison Morgan. "It's imbedded in our head and we did it."

South Oak Cliff (31-7) played much of the season under the specter of an investigation into the use of an ineligible player at the 2006 tournament.

Although an ineligible player requires automatic forfeiture of those games, the results of the school's investigation have not officially been turned over to the University Interscholastic League.

The school is also investigating the 2005 and 2007 seasons.

"There have been some trying times this year," South Oak Cliff coach James Mays II said. "We have taken some hits, some deserved and some not. The community always had our back."

The previous titles were high-flying affairs with circus dunks and showtime teams that dominated opponents. The Golden Bears won this one by getting physical and not letting a fast Southwest team race away once it got the lead in the fourth quarter.

Eventually, size and strength won out over speed. South Oak Cliff held a team that averaged 97 points a game to its lowest total of the postseason.

Southwest had a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter before South Oak Cliff rallied, steadily shaving the lead with a defense that forced critical turnovers. Andrews' baseline layup tied it at 76-76 and his two free throws 15 seconds later made it 78-77.

Brandon Jones added the final point with a free throw with 6.9 seconds left. South Oak Cliff forced two turnovers in the final 10 seconds to keep Southwest from taking a final shot to win or tie.

Michael Connor scored 28 points and Kendall Timmons and Miquel Turley each scored 15 for Southwest (31-7). Timmons and Turley both fouled out in the final minute and weren't on the floor when Southwest needed a final shot.

Jones led South Oak Cliff with 25 points. Morgan, a 6-foot-11 center who has signed with LSU, had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks and scored seven in the Golden Bears' rally.

CLASS 5A

North Crowley 73, Fort Bend Dulles 67: AUSTIN -- Willie Warren was already an All-American. His fourth-quarter performance in the Class 5A final will make him unforgettable at the Texas state tournament.

Warren scored 27 points, 15 in the fourth quarter, leading North Crowley to the Class 5A championship with a 73-67 win over Fort Bend Dulles on Saturday night.

Warren's game was about more than points. It was about clutch play, shooting and passing as the McDonald's All-American dished eight assists, including one that set up a crucial 3-pointer.

And it was about one spectacular dunk in the final minute that will go down as one of the best in tournament history.

North Crowley led 68-64 when Warren, who has signed with Oklahoma, slipped behind the defense on an inbounds play and TJ Franklin launched the perfect pass to catch him stride. With the catch and a dribble, Warren launched for a thunderous tomahawk dunk that brought the crowd to its feet.

Dulles' Shaun Umeh, who drew the matchup of guarding Warren, nearly matched him with 26 points, nine rebounds and six steals in a thrilling 1-on-1 matchup.

But there was no stopping Warren when he got rolling in the back-and-forth fourth quarter.

CLASS 3A

Kennedale 61, Burkburnett 59, OT: AUSTIN -- One second, one shot, one state championship for Kennedale.

Brian Davis' baseline layup with 1 second left in overtime lifted Kennedale to a 61-59 victory over Burkburnett on Saturday for the Class 3A state championship.

The basket, on Davis' only shot in overtime, barely floated over the outstretched arms of two Burkburnett defenders, capping a tense back-and-forth contest that twice saw Burkburnett rally to tie it late.

Kennedale led by 10 at the start of the fourth before Burkburnett sent it to overtime on Desmond Strickland's 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining. Strickland lifted his team again when he made three free throws with 14 seconds left in overtime to make it 59-59.

After a timeout, Kennedale's Dominque Harris drove the left side of the lane, then dumped the pass to Davis for the final shot. When it went in, several Burkburnett players fell to the court in disbelief as the final buzzer sounded.

Harris led Kennedale (33-5) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, but missed a shot in the final second of regulation that would have won the game.

The Kennedale boys won their first state championship in their first state tournament. The Kennedale girls lost in the 3A title game a week earlier.

CLASS 2A

Ponder 72, Tuscola Jim Ned 51: AUSTIN -- Left, right, hard or soft, it didn't matter. Nathan McPherson had the perfect touch off the backboard with just about any shot from anywhere on the court.

With McPherson seemingly picking his points with pinpoint accuracy off the glass, Ponder rolled to the Class 2A state championship Saturday, shooting 64 percent in a 72-51 win over Tuscola Jim Ned.

Everything seemed to be working right for Ponder (39-2). Even a heave-ho 3-pointer that Calvin Redfearn launched with two hands over his head dropped in at the third-quarter buzzer.

Jim Ned (29-8) had nothing to match that kind of skill and luck. The Indians were back in the tournament for the first time since 2005 when they made the final with guard Colt McCoy, now the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.

Blake Allen scored 22 points and Jordan Coffman scored 17 to lead Jim Ned.

Ponder, which also won a title in 2001 and lost in the '06 championship game, led the entire game.

The Lions closed the first quarter with Isaiah Boxell's 3-pointer with 2 seconds left.

In the second, a 10-0 run over the final three minutes built the lead to 34-19 by halftime. McPherson, who was 7-of-9 shooting in the half, scored twice in the run, hauling in a crosscourt pass from Boxell for a fast-break layup.

Redfearn ended the quarter with a 3-pointer from deep in the left corner that sent Ponder running into the locker room waving their arms to whip up the fans as they left the court.

CLASS A DIVISION I

Thorndale 53, Big Sandy 42: AUSTIN -- Brandon Irwin and defense. It was the perfect combination for Thorndale to finish a near perfect season with another state championship.

Irwin scored 19 points, nine in the fourth quarter, and Thorndale's defense clamped down on Dallardsville Big Sandy as the defending champion Bulldogs won another Class A Division I title with a 53-42 victory Saturday.

Cody Schneider added 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers, for Thorndale (36-1), which suffered its only loss against a Class 4A opponent.

Corey Tolar scored 14 points and Troy Langley had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead Big Sandy (27-11), which made its first state tournament in 20 years. Big Sandy's last lead, 22-21, lasted about 20 seconds in the second quarter before Irwin made a 3-pointer.

Irwin and Schneider got rolling early, combining for 24 of Thorndale's 30 points in the first half. The duo ended the first quarter when Irwin tipped the ball away from Big Sandy's Melton Abbey to Schneider, who dished it right back for an easy fast-break layup.

The duo seemed to have an answer for every challenge Big Sandy could muster.

When Big Sandy tied it at 18-18, Schneider made a 3-pointer. When the Wildcats briefly took the lead, Irwin's 3-pointer sparked a 9-3 run to halftime. Sederrick Brooks had two steals and four points in the run that put Thorndale up 30-25 going into the third.

Thorndale was 64-3 over its two championship seasons.

CLASS A DIVISION II

Laneville 56, Goodrich 50: AUSTIN -- Marcus Anderson scored 25 points, leading Laneville to the Class A Division II state championship with a 56-50 victory over Goodrich.

Byron Blanton had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Laneville (32-5), which had returned to the title game after losing in the final last season.

Laneville was the smallest school at the state tournament with 40 students. Of the 19 males enrolled, 14 played basketball.

DeShune Williams scored 20 points and Steven Chavarria scored 15 for Goodrich (32-6).
