The Texas Summer Grand Slam is the largest junior tennis tournament in the state, and it's not getting smaller.

Some 929 players are registered for the Super Champs tournament, the highest-ranked division in U.S. Tennis Association competition. That's up from a state-record record 888 when the Bryan-College Station area first hosted the event two years ago.

After a successful two-year hosting stint, the B-CS area begins another two-year agreement Friday with play at seven sites. The bulk of the matches are played at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center and Penberthy Intramural Courts. Other sites include Miramont and Pebble Creek Country Clubs; Bryan and A&M Consolidated High Schools; and Sam Rayburn and Jane Long Middle Schools.

Location and the concentration of courts at A&M has helped B-CS organizers lure the event away from Wichita Falls, says Pebble Creek Country Club tennis pro Todd Taylor.

"The A&M facility, with 30 courts and all of the matches at A&M the last four days, is a big part of it," Taylor said. "It's centrally located, and A&M says that 80 percent of the state is within a 3-hour drive of College Station. If you lived in McAllen or Harlingen, you didn't drive to Wichita Falls."

Because many Texas high schools did not hold graduation ceremonies until this week, the schedule was altered to accommodate. Competitors in the under-18 division will not begin play until Sunday. The tournament concludes on June 16.

Four-time Class 2A state champion Austin Klores is the only seeded local singles player at No. 9 in boys under-18, but Taylor expects strong performances from other unseeded players. That includes A&M Consolidated players Anik Cepeda, Heather Brien and Kevin Wright. Frankie Colunga, who had a strong performance in the under-12 competition last year, moves up to 14s.

California lays claim to the largest junior tournament in the national with more singles competitors.
