CLASS 5A

ATHLETE: A&M Consolidated's Whitney Harris will make her fourth appearance at state and her third in the 400 meters. She was second as a sophomore and fourth last year.

RELAY TEAM: No Brazos Valley 5A team qualified.

SCHOOL: No BV squad has a shot at a team title, but Consol's girls have a 20-point potential.

BEST STORYLINE: Consol's Keri Wood will catch a flight back from the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Reno, Nev., where she qualified in fundamental accounting. Wood will return in time to compete in the 1,600 at the state meet for the second straight year.

CLASS 4A

ATHLETE: Brenham's Chantel Bratton could have a shot at the gold in the shot put.

RELAY TEAM: Brenham did not have a 1,600 relay team advance beyond district last year. This year, Kendell Washington, Quenten Chapel, Tito Mathis and Kendrick Washington are in contention for a medal on the boys side.

SCHOOL: Brenham's boys and girls teams each have the potential to score 30 points.

BEST STORYLINE: Three Brenham athletes are back at state for another shot at the title. Bratton is joined by state veterans Lindsey Lechler in the pole vault and Luke Poehlmann in the shot put.

CLASS 3A

ATHLETE: Cameron's Brenda Pena ran the 3,200 at state her sophomore season but missed the trip last year, getting edged out at regionals. She continues Yoe High School's strong distance tradition by returning for her senior season.

RELAY TEAM: Caldwell's girls 1,600 relay team returns to state with a medal shot. April Howell joins three returning members -- Brianna Haynes, Vantazia Jackson and Elliot Laferiere.

SCHOOL: Cameron, Navasota and Caldwell can each score 20 points in girls competition.

BEST STORYLINE: The match races between Madisonville's Brock Taylor and Fairfield's Gavan Bass moves to the highest level. They have gone 1-2 since the District 19-3A meet, with Taylor still trying to break through for a victory.

CLASS 2A

ATHLETE: Lexington sophomore sprinter Elydia Farwell, the defending champion in the 100 and the runner-up in the 200, has a shot at gold in both.

RELAY TEAM: No Brazos Valley 2A team qualified.

SCHOOL: Even without relays, Lexington has the potential to score 40 points on the girls side.

BEST STORYLINE: Hearne's Cyleshia Benson continues a 26-2A tradition by taking a rivalry to the next level. Benson has been chasing Farwell for two years and faces her again in the 200 final.

CLASS A

ATHLETE: Anderson-Shiro's Misha Henderson narrowly missed trips to state last year in the unusual combination of the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles. She is at Austin in both this year.

RELAY TEAM: Despite an altered lineup, the Normangee Panthers send another relay team to state. Justin Mullinnix, Landon Hodges, Dillon Wolfe, Jordan Mullinnix compete this year in the 800 relay. Their time and lane make them the gold-medal favorite, and they have a shot at the Class A record.

SCHOOL: The Bremond boys could score 30 points.

BEST STORYLINE: Henderson and Cody Aikin are the first Anderson-Shiro athletes to qualify for state since the school consolidated. Ernest Meneff won the long jump and high jump for Anderson in 1975.
