CLASS 5A

Amarillo defends title, beats Austin Westlake: SAN MARCOS -- Brianne Barker and Amarillo High defended their titles Saturday in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 victory against Austin Westlake for the Class 5A state volleyball championship.

Barker, named tournament MVP for the second consecutive year, had 30 assists, eight kills and six digs in a matchup of teams that had one loss -- to each other -- all season. Amarillo (46-1) had 10 different players with at least one kill, led by Kelsey Black with 10.

Westlake (42-2) was led by Ally Miller with nine kills and Sara Shaw with eight. Elly Barrett had 27 assists.

Amarillo's win broke another tie with Westlake. Each had two state titles going in, with Amarillo winning last year and in 2001 and Westlake taking the 2002 and 2004 championships.

CLASS 4A

Waco Midway sweeps Friendswood: SAN MARCOS -- Jordan Rice had 13 kills and 11 digs to lead Waco Midway past Friendswood 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 in the Class 4A state volleyball championship Saturday.

Rice had plenty of help, with Megan Mader and Laura Simon each chipping in nine kills. Amanda Woolley, Kelsey O'Neill and Ale'tra Ware had three kills apiece for Midway (47-1), which was unbeaten a year ago before losing in the state semifinals. O'Neill had 30 assists.

Jessie Hays led Friendswood (38-7) with 11 kills, while Whitney Rhoden had eight and Christi Dorch added seven. Jenny Brekke had 28 assists.

CLASS 3A

Wimberley beats Monahans to repeat as champs: SAN MARCOS -- Most Valuable Player Katie Milam had 22 kills and Lacey Lea added 23 as Wimberley defended its Class 3A state volleyball title with a 26-28, 25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 15-10 victory against Monahans on Saturday.

Wimberley (38-7) won its sixth state title in nine years. The Texans beat Monahans (36-11) in the 2003 title match as well.

Bailey Marcum had 26 kills for Monahans, Jordan Latham added 18 and Heather Schulz 10. Kaitlin Mitchell had 55 assists for the Loboes.

Monahans, state champ in 2004, has won nine titles in 14 trips to the state tournament.

Wimberley's Kaili Cusack had 25 assists and freshman setter Maddie Milner added 21.

CLASS 2A

Newcomer Bushland upsets 3-time champ Poth: SAN MARCOS -- Bushland won its first state volleyball title Saturday in only the school's fourth year of existence, upsetting three-time defending champion Poth 28-26, 25-15, 25-22 in the Class 2A finals.

Christina Steinkruger earned MVP honors with 12 kills and 21 assists for Bushland (31-7), which lost to Poth in last year's semifinals.

Poth (37-9) was denied a four-peat for the second time in school history. The Pirettes had also won three straight titles from 1995-97.

Lauren Waclawczyk led Poth will 12 kills.

The championship is the first in any sport for Bushland, which began competing in varsity sports in 2005.
