A brief rain shower under bright, mostly sunny skies interrupted the Boys 18 Doubles championship match of the Texas Summer Grand Slam after just two points.

It might have been an omen.

Chris Camillone and Ben Guthrie broke the serve of big-hitting lefty Max Stevens when the match resumed 6 minutes later. Camillone and Guthrie never trailed in the final, beating Stevens and Texas A&M signee Austin Klores 6-3, 6-1 at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The huge USTA tournament is winding down, with only the Boys 18 Doubles and Girls 18 Doubles finals played in the afternoon session. About 30 spectators -- several of them players still competing in singles -- sat in the shade of the Stadium Club to watch the doubles.

Guthrie, from Plano West, and Camillone, from St. Stephen's Episcopal in Austin, have been doubles partners for a couple of years. This was the first tournament pairing for Stevens, who is from Dallas, and Klores, who won four UIL state championships for Franklin.

Last year, Camillone and Guthrie lost to Stevens and Sergio Antognelli in the Boys 16 final. They avoided another second-place finish by applying early, steady pressure on Klores and Stevens.

Although Stevens had the biggest serve of the finalists, Camillone and Guthrie served effectively and volleyed splendidly.

"Me and Ben joke that we seem to get leads and then let them slip away," Camillone said. "We felt like we had to keep the pressure on them. You feel like you have to hold on to the break, especially with Max serving 1,000 miles an hour."

Stevens played two consolation singles matches earlier in the day. He and Klores never got on track after dropping serve in the first game, and Stevens was broken again to end the first set.

"They came out playing well and we were sluggish at the start," Klores said. "We played well in the other matches. It wasn't really cooking for us today. We were playing catch-up the whole time, and that's hard."

Klores and Stevens broke Guthrie's serve to trail 2-1 in the second set, but that was the only time they were on serve. The champions responded by breaking Klores, as University of Texas pledge Camillone secured the break with a scorching return down the line.

Camillone and Guthrie won the last four games.

"That was the best we've played in the tournament," Guthrie said. "It's probably the biggest tournament we've won."

In the Girls 18 doubles final, Lilly Kimbell of New Braunfels and Hideko Tachibana of Canyon Lake beat Amy Allin of Dallas and Heather Steinbauer of The Woodlands 6-2, 6-2.

Anik Cepeda of College Station, the last area player in the singles competition, lost her Girls 18 consolation match to Millie Nichols of Joshua 6-2, 6-4.

Two other championships were decided Friday. In Boys 16 Singles, Chase Curry of Wichita Falls beat Andrew Korinek of Mansfield 7-5, 6-2. In Boys 14 Singles, Harrison Adams of New Braunfels defeated Carlos Di Laura of Austin 6-4, 6-3.

There will be one championship match Saturday. Rosalia Aida of Round Rock, a ninth seed, will play second-seeded Tachibana at 9:30 a.m.

The Boys 18 Singles final is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday.
