SFA wins despite Woodside's 60-point game

DES MOINES, Iowa -- North Dakota State senior Ben Woodside made the most of regulation and three overtimes against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, scoring a school-record 60 points.

But SFA's Walt Harris hit a game-winning jumper with seven seconds left to spoil Woodside's night and lift the Lumberjacks to a 112-111 win over the Bison (4-3) in the first round of the Hy-Vee Classic.

Woodside stole the show, setting several team and Summit League records. It was also the most points scored in the NCAA this year.

Woodside made 14 of 32 field goals and two of six 3-pointers. His 60 points broke Lance Berwald's 24-year-old school record of 53 points and Michael Watson's Summit League record of 54 points set by the former UMKC player against Oral Roberts in 2003.

Woodside tied an NCAA records and set school and conference records for free throws made and attempted by going 30 for 35 from the line. Berwald and Marv Bachmeier had shared the old record for makes with 17, and Woodside had made as many as 16 free throws in a game. Mike Kuppich held the record for free throws attempted (23) since 1972.

His 30 free throws tied the NCAA single-game record set by LSU's Pete Maravich in December 1969 against Oregon State.

The Lumberjacks (5-2) stormed out of the gate to take a 20-2 lead.
