Mets to sign Rodriguez for 3 years, $37 million

LAS VEGAS -- Record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez and the New York Mets reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday on a $37 million, three-year contract.

The sides still have to work out a written agreement and the pitcher must pass a physical, two people familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not yet been completed.

K-Rod, who turns 27 next month, recorded 62 saves for the Los Angeles Angels this year, five more than the previous big league mark set by Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox in 1990. He is a three-time All-Star.

Abrams scores 26 points as Texas beats Villanova

NEW YORK -- A.J. Abrams had 26 points and Damion James added 16 to lead No. 6 Texas to a 67-58 victory over No. 15 Villanova on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic.

Abrams, who had 18 points in the second half, and James, the Longhorns' two leading scorers, combined to score 16 straight points for Texas (7-1) when it pulled away to a double-digit lead late in the second half.

Villanova (8-1) had pulled to 41-38 with 10:54 to play on a layup by Dante Cunningham, who led the Wildcats with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Sam Houston State hammers Texas College

HUNTSVILLE -- Preston Brown's 21 points helped Sam Houston State defeat Texas College 89-54 on Tuesday night.

Brown hit 8 of 11 field goals for the Bearkats (3-5). Corey Allmond added 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Drae Murray had 12 points.

Sam Houston State led 39-28 at the half and used an 18-4 run to open the second half and take a 27-point lead.

Auburn students, alumni protest for Tuberville

AUBURN, Ala. -- Dozens of Auburn University students and alumni marched across campus to the president's mansion Tuesday to protest the school's treatment of former football coach Tommy Tuberville.

University officials say Tuberville resigned on his own last week after a decade that included an undefeated season and a Southeastern Conference title. But many demonstrators claimed that administrators and powerful boosters forced him out after a 5-7 record that included a 36-0 loss to Alabama.

Protester Philip Smith said Auburn never would have agreed to give Tuberville the $5.1 million required under his contract unless it fired him or forced him to quit.
