Elsa Murano on Sunday announced her resignation as president of Texas A&M University, saying her term will end Monday.
Her resignation came a day before the Texas A&M System Board of Regents planned to meet in a special closed session to discuss the future leadership of the university. Action still is expected during the meeting, which was widely regarded as a means to remove Murano from the position.
The move follows three weeks of turmoil at the university that began when A&M System Chancellor Mike McKinney confirmed to The Eagle that the possibility of combining his job with Murano's was under consideration as a cost-cutting move.
McKinney said no plans for such a move were in place, but the idea was criticized by the campus community.
Shortly after McKinney made the disclosure, The Eagle obtained a copy of Murano's annual performance evaluation, a scathing review that was hand-written by McKinney and lacking in specifics.
A statement from the A&M System said plans for Murano's succession would be taken up in the near future. It was unclear whether the regents would discuss those plans at Monday's meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Student Center.
