A&M gas line cut; 3 buildings evacuated

Three Texas A&M University campus buildings were evacuated Friday morning when workers struck a gas line near Nagle Hall.

A work crew was planting a tree about 9 a.m. and ruptured the gas line with a piece of excavation equipment, University police Chief Elmer Schneider said.

The gas line was secured within an hour, officials said.

Nagle Hall, the Psychology Building and the Academic Building were evacuated, then reoccupied at 10:23 a.m.

Units from the University Police Department, Environmental Health and Safety, Texas A&M Physical Plant, College Station Fire Department and Atmos Energy responded to the call, Schneider said. The campus-wide alert system, Code Maroon, was activated.

"It caused some disruption of transportation because there were buses coming in from off campus, and one of the stops is that area in front of the Psychology Building," Schneider said. "Other than that, it didn't cause any major problems."
