A&M ranked 24th

Texas A&M University once again has been ranked among the top public universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

A&M tied with Rutgers for 24th place in the magazine's category of Best National Universities.

The Dwight Look College of Engineering tied for ninth place with the engineering programs at Penn State and the University of California at San Diego, while the Mays Business School tied with the Universities of Florida and Georgia for 18th place.

The university as a whole placed fifth in the "Great Schools, Great Prices" category, which recognizes schools that offer a good value for the education provided.

"Being affordable and accessible always rank alongside offering a high-quality education as prime factors in everything we do to enhance the college experience for the young men and women who choose to come to Texas A&M," A&M President Elsa Murano said in a statement released Friday.

She noted that she had hoped for better results in the main category.

"Obviously, we're disappointed in the overall ranking given that we firmly believe Texas A&M is one of the great universities in the United States," Murano said. "But this serves as a wake-up call that we will need to embrace bold, aggressive initiatives in order to meet our Vision 2020 aspirations of being ranked among the top 10 public institutions nationwide."

Comment Title: Still a long way to go...
"Being affordable and accessible always rank alongside offering a high-quality education as prime factors in everything we do..." Since when is A&M accessible. Last time I checked, TAMU was on managed enrollment and only the top achieving students were admitted. I am not sure you would call that accessible. Realistically, TAMU is like many other Universities. It's only us who think we are so good, that if we continue to tell ourselves it's a great institution, we'll soon believe it. The fact is TAMU has a long way to go to be a top 10 institution and showing the cronysim we've been seeing since the president took office will only impedes the progress of moving up in the rankings.

Comment Title: rankings
I think too much tradition among good ole boys at A&M may be hurting them...

Comment Title: Place holder?
Yes, but Murano does meet one important quality for being A&M's president: She's a Republican. The last president gave $2,000 to Bush the Younger's 2004 campaign and $1,000 to Kay Bailey's. It will be interesting to see how much the regents dictate that she contribute to McSame.

Comment Title: No need to worry
Since President Murano is only a place holder until Gov. Perry takes over the job as President, what she says really doesn't matter. If you don't believe me, just look at the newest VPSA. He is a former Marine General who has no experience and did not even meet the job qualifications (No doctorate, no experience at a university, etc). But, he just so happened to be Gov. Perry's roommate at A&M.

Comment Title: keep working
It takes a lot more than thinking A&M is good, in order to actually rank higher. They must walk the walk not just talk the talk - like they are so good at doing - in order to rank higher.
