Aggie accused of assaulting officer

A 21-year-old Texas A&M University sophomore was arrested early Thursday after he got into a brawl with College Station police outside a bar, officials said.

Jonathan Michael Frey was approached by police at The Tap on Harvey Road just after 2 a.m. He was "flailing around" a full pitcher of beer, spilling it on people and arguing with bar employees, according to an officer's affidavit.

Police tried to escort Frey away from the crowd, but he jerked away and began running, officials said. Court documents state that an officer grabbed Frey's arm as he ran, but the Aggie knocked the officer to the ground.

A bicycle officer tried to block Frey's path, but Frey struck the officer on the head, police said.

Frey was arrested after a brief struggle with police and jailed on charges of evading arrest and assault on a public servant. He was being held Thursday at the Brazos County Jail on $16,500 bail.

Assaulting a police officer is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in a prison and a $10,000 fine.
