A Georgia journalist who wrote a column about a chance encounter with an Aggie Army captain who recently had returned from Iraq will be on campus next week.
Darrell Huckaby was spending the day on Jekyll Island when he met Capt. Paul Fleming and his family. Fleming, a member of the Texas A&M class of 2003, was stationed at nearby Fort Stewart.
In a syndicated column published in April, Huckaby wrote about how impressed he was with Fleming and his wife, Laura, also an Aggie, and their outlook on life, love and their alma mater.
The story was circulated arouond the world via the Internet and generated more than 2,000 e-mails from Aggies, many of whom invited Huckaby to visit Aggieland, he has said.
Huckaby will visit the campus Monday and Tuesday. He will be in the Memorial Student Center Flag Room at 7 p.m. Monday for a meet-and-greet.
The original column can be found at www.newtoncitizen.com/main.asp?SectionID=8&subsectionID=8&articleID=3100. The Eagle will publish a follow-up article by Huckaby on the Opinions page Sunday.
