Funeral services for former Texas A&M University System Regent J.L. Huffines are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.
Burial is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
The 85-year-old businessman and 1944 A&M graduate died at his Dallas home Wednesday, according to officials with the A&M system.
He resigned his post on the board of regents a month ago, citing health reasons. He was on the nine-member board for 17 months after Gov. Rick Perry appointed him.
Huffines served on a finance committee, as well as the buildings and physical plant committee. He was the board's special liaison for the 12th Man Foundation, where he once served as president.
"I join the other members of the Board of Regents in expressing our deep sense of loss and sadness at the passing of our great friend and colleague," said Bill Jones, chairman of the board, in a statement. "J.L. was a pleasure to work with on the board and to know as an individual. He was devoted to doing the best for the A&M System and the people of Texas. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sydney, and his family."
After graduating from A&M, Huffines joined the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He trained troops during the Korean War, achieving the rank of first lieutenant.
Among his accolades from his alma mater, Huffines received the Texas A&M University Distinguished Alumnus Award and was inducted into the Corps of Cadets Hall of Honor. He was named to the Chancellor's 21st Century Council of Advisors and the Evans Library Capital Campaign at Texas A&M.
