Layoffs at A&M
By ROBERT CESSNA

Seventeen people in the Texas A&M athletics department will take early retirement or were laid off in what the university is calling a “reduction in force.”
The employees were informed Thursday morning and some of them met with human services representatives at 2 p.m. at Reed Arena.
Two of those affected — Jim Kotch and Chris Harrell — confirmed the personnel moves.
Kotch, property and inventory supervisor, was among those laid off. Kotch, an A&M grad, was the longtime ticket manager until being reassigned after Bill Byrne was named athletics director.
Award-winning assistant media relations director Harrell was also among those laid off. Harrell, who graduated from A&M Consolidated High School, has been with the department 10 years. He was the sports information director for women’s swimming and equestrian. His media guides annually won national awards.
The A&M athletics department has been cutting corners as it pays back a $16 million loan former A&M president Bob Gates gave Byrne four years ago.

Comment Title: sorry jim
everybody knows which way s**t flows, sorry to hear of the loss of your job, even though it wasn't your real job anymore,i remember sitting in the g.rollie ticket office as a kid watching the way that you guys took care of the students and the general pulic, like they were family, an aggie family.sadly a&m is now just another corporate sell out. the guys in austin are sure loving this i bet, nothing makes them laugh more than us doing something with no backbone. as much as i hate to say it, maybe they do represent the morals and ethics that texans should be proud of,even if it is not what we do sometimes or what we are remembered for.i'm sure that god has a special place picked out for bill, penny, and company. the athletic department was in the black with wally right?

For those who are curious, this is a weblink listing all of the salaries for the TAMU System as of September 2008. http://ia310830.us.archive.org/2/items/TexasAmUniversitySalariesSep2008/ This listing is quite interesting.

Comment Title: Prices going up!
Tickets, parking, and usage fees are getting ready to go through the roof. Only the very rich will be able to afford to go and when they charge so much for the local high schools to play there what are they going to do? $15000 per game for Reed, who knows what for football?

Comment Title: What a shame and a travesty!
Let's see now, the Chancellor's skybox is worth how much? But, of course that's a necessity. But he's paying Dr. Murano how much not to be president and not to sue him and the Board of Regents for their shabby treatment of her? And Coach Francione is still being paid off his two million for how much longer? And why doesn't Loftin know why the budget cuts are needed and where the 20 mil figure came from? Who, other than a puppet, would start ruining persons lives with no knowledge of understanding why he was doing so?

Or should I probably say - too many Coaches and not enough SUPPORT staff. But that will never happen at AM.

Wouldn't it have been better to have cut operating expenses especially travel and not support personnel with families to feed?

went to high school with Chris Harrell. He is extremely knowledgeable and a good guy. Hope he lands on his feet. Maybe $bill will finally have to take a pay cutt! Oh yeah that's right, he won a national championship in checkers so he will be the first in line for a raise

Mr. Kotch was essentially put in an office with nothing to do when $Bill arrived and turned all ticketing over to the 12th Man Foundation. I was waiting to hear that he was one of the 15 (now "approximately 17"). Mr. Kotch is an Aggie through and through and did a very good job running the ticket office. I am sorry for what has happened to him, but at least he was able to work long enough to put his kids through college and retire.

Comment Title: Concerned Support Person
I am afraid this is what we are going to be hearing alot about soon. They never really go where they can save the big bucks they just hit the support staff, the ones that really can not afford to be laid off. I have gone through a few Reduction in Forces, and am always saddened on how the employees are treated. They should down size the top because the support staff is really working hard to make ends meet!

"no coaching staff...just support personnel." A bit condescending and dismissive are we, Mr. Cessna? Don't support people count, too?

Comment Title: Not the first time......
Layoffs used to be unthinkable here at TAMU...but not no more. No one is irreplaceable or safe in this economy...no matter where.

I take offense to Cessna's remark "Apparently no coaching staff members were involved, just support personnel." Just "support personnel"...let me tell you, those of us who are in support positions do exactly what our title says--SUPPORT. This university--including the coaches--would be hard pressed to stay afloat were it not for those of us who are classified as "support personnel." I'd appreciate a less condescending remark next time.
