Texas A&M chancellor announces retirement

Chancellor Mike McKinney said this morning that he is stepping down from his post as chief of the Texas A&M University System.

The announcement came in a memo to chief executive officers of the A&M System on Tuesday morning.

“After serving as your Chancellor since November 2006, the time has come for me to step aside,” he wrote in the 1 1/2-page note in which the subject line read "Retirement Announcement."

“My plan is to continue as Chancellor through the end of the Legislative Session and retire from my position effective July 1, 2011.”

More details later from Eagle reporter Vimal Patel.
