The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and Scott & White are joining to host an open house for their new Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
The two institutions have pledged more than $40 million to establish the institute, where researchers will use adult stem cells to develop new ways to combat problems such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, strokes and Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cardiac, kidney and pulmonary diseases.
During the open house, Dr. Darwin Prockop -- the inaugural holder of the Stearman Chair in Genomic Medicine and professor of molecular and cellular medicine at the College of Medicine -- will be formally introduced as the director of the center.
Prockop previously served as the director of the Center for Gene Therapy at Tulane University.
The event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Scott & White West Campus, 5701 Airport Road in Temple.
