Texas A&M's winningest football coach will serve as the university's summer commencement speaker, officials said Wednesday.
R.C. Slocum is set to speak at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 in Rudder Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. More than 1,600 Aggies are expected to receive degrees during 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies the following day in Reed Arena.
"Coach Slocum has a well-deserved reputation as an exceptionally effective motivational speaker, and I am confident he will bring a message that will be very meaningful to our graduates," Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said in a news release.
Slocum, who was relieved of his duties as the Aggies' head football coach in 2002, has remained at A&M as a special presidential adviser.
He had 123 victories since becoming head coach in 1989 and led the team in the 1990s, its most successful decade ever with 94 victories, the most by any Division I football program in Texas at that time.
