In keeping with tradition, Texas A&M University on Monday announced that another collie had been selected to become the next campus mascot.

Reveille VIII will be introduced later this month at Kyle Field during the season-opener football game against Arkansas State.

She will replace Reveille VII, who retired at the end of the spring semester. Administrators appointed a search committee tasked with determining if the next mascot should be another female collie or a different breed.

The committee came back in May with a list of characteristics that the next Reveille -- an adult dog with a noble look about her similar to a collie or golden retriever -- should have, but stopped short of recommending a specific breed.

The panel also suggested the mascot be a healthy, medium to large dog that is outgoing, positively motivated, at ease in large crowds and not highly reactive or afraid of loud noises. The next mascot, they said, should have undergone some sort of service dog training.

Administrators said just last month that they had narrowed the search to about 10 training organizations, including one based in Texas.

I'm glad they picked a collie. It's a great tradition and there's nothing wrong with the breed. The idea of a mutt just wouldn't be right. I'd hate the idea of our mascot being born an accident.

Form the committe now to begin searching for Rev IX that way when this one goes belly up we will be ahead of the game. For the low price of $50K per year I will chair the committee. It should take us 3 to 5 years. What a bargain!

Dwight - as someone who has been searching for a collie herself, I can tell you that good collie breeders in Texas seem to be a rare commodity, so it isn't suprising they had to go out of state. CountyGuy - do you actually have proof any of the Reveille collies have been inbred or do you just have a thing against breeding in general?

Well, maybe an inbred Collie is a fitting mascot for the kind of school TAMU is becoming.

Comment Title: You guessed it: Collie will be A&M's Reveille VIII
I like the idea of a Collie. Not just because I have two animated colies that sing and dance to the war hymn, but, because when I look at Reveille on the field, I want to see a dog that looks like the dog that was there when I went, Class of '76. One adopted mutt isn't going to change the world. A good thought, but, collies are tradition.

The only place they could find a new mascot was in Kansas? You mean that Texas has run out of Collies? You would have thougth they could have found at least one healthy Collie in the state of Texas. I hope when we play either of the Kansas teams the dog knows who to root for.

The panel suggested the mascot be "healthy". How many meetings did it take to figure that one out? Or were we really considering a dog w/ a severe case of the mange or something???

Thanks to the heavens that someone or group connected to Texas A&M made an common sense decision instead of one mired in PC and psychobabble! It is refreshing to know that logic and reasonableness can still be found at the University.

Comment Title: duh
Um in case you were wondering which newspaper you were reading...this is the newspaper for Bryan-College Station. Meaning that it reports news involving Texas A&M...located in College Station. It is news because mascots are important at every university, the only difference here is that it is a real animal and not just someone in a funny costume, so it does matter when they get replaced. Just like it makes the news when Bevo gets replaced. Why do you have to comment on an article you don't care about? Just don't read it, and move on. Anyway...I hope this one doesn't bite. :)

Hey "Aggie Fan", Snoopy was wearing senior boots several Reveilles ago, and has both spent time in combat and has forgotten more about what it really means to be an Aggie than you obviously know, (since you apparently lack a sense of irony or humor, you might want to know that the comment was making fun of needing a "committee" to take way too long to select a new dog,) but feel free to name a place and time and we'll meet to discuss it.

I was once told by a local TV sports reader that if I wanted news on Baylor sports that I needed to switch to either channel 6 or 10. I did then and still do whenever he comes on. That said: give the aggies a break. The local college, it's sports programs, and (yes) mascot are important to them.
