A College Station man remained behind bars Thursday after authorities said he threatened to kill an officer following a scuffle with police during his arrest on a DWI charge.
Duncan Eric Helton, 52, was taken into custody after a minor car accident Wednesday in the parking lot of Burger King on Texas Avenue, College Station police said. Helton failed standard field sobriety test, according to court documents which detail how the driving while intoxicated charge was enhanced since he had three or more previous convictions.
Authorities said Helton became irate on the way to jail and threatened the officer with violence. When the officer was escorting Helton inside, Helton kicked him in the genitals, documents state.
Helton, who fell to the ground after the officer grabbed his foot, was taken to the College Station Medical Center where he was treated for a cut to his head, according to police reports.
There, Helton threatened various officers and hospital staff, police said. He told one officer: “I’m gonna find you. And you know what? I’m gonna kill you,” according to police reports.
Helton was charged with assaulting a public servant, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Because of his previous DWI convictions, that charge is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He also was charged with retaliation.
Helton remained in the Brazos County Jail on Thursday morning without bail.
